Chewing all four feet ( no hair, solid raw sores ), constant scratching from tip of nose to base of tail - the whole underside of her body,  both ears packed with crud,  acid reflux,  nausea,  vomiting,  diarrhea,  aggression to both humans and other dogs ( bit tech taking out spay sutures )  lethargy,  liver problems detoxing, problems keeping weight on, hyper sensitive immune system,  seizure like activity during scratching sessions. ( tried epilepsy medication to control but it knocked her out too deep ) She still suffers the same today.

None. When I questioned the high dose of Heartgard Plus, I was told that they use higher potencies when treating the disease so she would be just fine.  Each time I gave her one she broke out in hives.

NO  ( I did try to fight it but I was still under control of my Conventional Vet ).

10: The original reason you took your pet to the veterinarian [toenail clipping, vaccinations, injury, any symptoms]:  Puppy Well Pet Visit. Last time she was healthy.
 
11: How was your pet's health/life affected after taking this drug? 

She has struggled ever since.  She does not lead a normal life.  She is hyper-sensitive to almost everything. Suffers from major allergies.  She is limited on what she can eat and do.  MY LIFE HAS CHANGED ALSO.  I can not work out of the house, she needs constant watching or else she will chew and scratch herself bloody.
 
12: If you question the truth/accuracy of anything your veterinarian told you about your pet's health, etc., you may use this area to "air" your doubts/concerns:
I have been to over SEVEN different " Veterinarians " with Ginger's problems in a six year period, so far...
 
My Conventional Vet is the one that gave her way to many vaccines. She was not well after the first shot and it should have stopped there.  He prescribed Heartgard Plus the first day she came in to see him, without taking any blood for a test AND the dose was for a 100 # dog, gingers weight was 41 lbs.  Inside her ears were packed with brown/black crud, when she was brought in for her puppy check up he failed to look in them. I questioned what he thought of her ears and he said they looked fine. Took me over two years to clean them out. She bit the tech that was taking out her spay sutures so I was told she needed to be muzzled when she was there from then on.  He is also the vet that put her on her first elimination diet for her allergies ( she lost five pounds and never stopped scratching ). She was on three different kinds of antibiotics within six months for separate issues. Two different antihistamines.  He wanted to put her on prozac for dogs, he said he thought it was more emotional than environmental. He is also the Dr. that did the skin scrapings, found yeast and bacteria but never said anything on how to treat it. ( good thing, it probably would have been a toxin ) He did the Heska Allergy tests on her and came up with a long list of allergens and wanted to start desensitization shots, never took into consideration the condition of her immune system or how stressed she has become from the scratching.
 
Then I found my Holistic Vet who started turning things around. He did administer her first Rabies booster ( by law ) and did follow up with a nosode to counteract the vaccine. Had me change her food to all organic home cooked and started supplementing with herbs but nothing helped. He put her on Pred but she had a violent gastric reaction to 1/2 pill. He even tried an epilepsy medication because when she has a scratching fit nobody can stop her, she is very intense and goes for blood, that just knocked her out, she could not walk. When it came time for her three years Rabies booster, I said no and he said he could not write a waiver so I went searching for another Vet.

In the meantime, I was sucked into the spell of a Holistic/Homeopathic Quack that deals with healing animals long distance ( only after she rips you off for around $500.00 in healing crystal symbols, computer generated homeopathic sugar pills, photo readings, and blue/green shelf liners. ( I caught on early and got all my money back )  Although she did tell me that since I decided not to go with her, my dog would only suffer and die.

My next experience was to do a CBC on Ginger to see if something comes up. I brought her into my Conventional Vet ( Holistic Vet does not do blood work ) For the blood draw and serum prep. I wanted to mail the blood and have the test done by a Dr. that deals in Thyroid Issues in Canines.  I asked all three Doctors if Ginger should be fasted before the draw and each one said is was not necessary. The Thyroid was normal but the other numbers came back way off the chart. The Blood specialist said we should check for Addisons/Cushings so we did another test which came back normal.  Another complete blood test was done 6 weeks later ( again not fasting ) the numbers that were high on the first one were in normal range but there were other reading that were off. All without fasting, all a waste of Ginger's time. ( because that IS all that matters here )

I went on to find a Dr. that would give me a waiver for her Rabies booster and found a Traditional Chinese Medicine Vet that worked out of her home. She sent me off with some TCM herbs and an over the counter " human grade " super-pro-biotic.  Within a week Ginger was in full blown hives, the super-pro-biotic was first prescribed at to high of a dose and way to strong for her system.  She developed a major hive on her eyelid and when I called with my concerns I was told that maybe I should take her into a vet...?

I started working with a " true " homeopath, long distance again. The only thing that has come out of that experience, besides a lot of learning is now Ginger suffers from a major yeast infection all over, inside and out. But now I can deal with the hives via homeopathy. Good vibes here.

I also called into my home a N.A.E.T Practitioner. I have been told that this method has worked on dogs with allergies and being the good dog mommy I am I had to give it a go.  I had her come to my house two times, both sessions were over $300.00 in charges.  She was very awkward, very invasive of Ginger's space and really did not do anything but take my checks. Never sent me any information on what transpired,  just held little vials of something and snapped her fingers while holding/grabbing my dog. She sent me to a communicator that told me I need to give Ginger away because I was the reason she was scratching and as long as Ginger was with me she would never get better.

I still have hope that someday Ginger will be able to run and play without scratching but right now I am broke, so is my trust in the Veterinary department.

4: The approximate date of the event: Last week of November 2004, ongoing to present (2-25-05)

5: The adverse reaction[s] YOU observed and/or became aware of [nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, inability to walk, gastric ulceration, liver failure, kidney damage, death, lethargy, aggression, etc.] - please list ALL known and/or suspected symptoms/conditions:
Vomiting, even more lethargic than originally, jaundice, and white gums, overall weakness & depression. Was eventually diagnosed with AIHA and needed a blood transfusion (pcv was 14), liver values were more abnormal than on the blood work done before the meds.

potential/possible risks/side effects BEFORE dispensing the named drug/vaccination, stating whether such information was provided verbally and/or in written form:  Not for either of these medications.  Only that the rimadyl should bring down the fever as would similar meds in a human. At the time I didn't know what the Metacam even was. With other medications I was given clear information about potential side effects (ie. prednisone.)

srdogs.com and the doghealth2 elist.

drug/vaccination to be given to your pet had you KNOWN of the potential/possible risks/side effects:  The initial situation was dire (fever over 106 that wouldn't 'break'), so I don't know. I most likely would have asked about other meds with less harmful side effects... but then I vividly remember those 'look how happy my dog is'
commercials that used to be on. Rimadyl is one of the few vet. meds I had ever heard of...

10: The original reason you took your pet to the veterinarian [toenail clipping, vaccinations, injury, any symptoms]:  extremely high fever and lethargy

11: How was your pet's health/life affected after taking this drug?
After the blood transfusion, Galileo has been on meds to suppress his immune system. He had an opposite reaction to prednisone (it decreased his rbc) which perplexed the vets, and has been on cyclosporine since.  The fact that his immune system is currently suppressed limits things in his life. I am afraid to take him around other animals, and to even brush his teeth for fear of infection. He has been having occasional bladder infections (he still has an e-collar on from a wound left after the transfusion.)

He will never have a vaccination again, because of the nature of AIHA.  We are just hoping that when his cyclosporine is decreased soon, his immune system will not continue to attack his red blood cells. This will determine how long he needs to stay on this med (which costs over
200 a month and carries some potential serious side effects as well),....

His liver values have returned to normal, thankfully (he has been on Denosyl (SAMe) since the incident.) Galileo has been a trooper through this all, that's what keeps me going!

I did not have a necropsy performed on my Sedona.  She had a c-section, was given Metacam for pain, and she died in my arms four hours later.  She never really seemed to recover from the anesthesia and was panting heavily.  I called my Vet and explained what she was doing.  He advised me to give her Cal-Pho-Sol because he thought she was going into eclampsia, even though she was not nursing.

5: The adverse reaction[s] YOU observed and/or became aware of [nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, inability to walk, gastric ulceration, liver failure, kidney damage, death, lethargy, aggression, etc.] - please list ALL known and/or suspected symptoms/conditions: March 1999, severe dog aggression, which waned off after about a month; March 2002, severe dog aggression and what we now recognize as focal seizures.  The aggression waned off after about a month, but has recurred since then without further vaccination.  The focal seizures are permanent.  They never went away.

11: How was your pet's health/life affected after the drug/vaccination? Permanent focal seizures which may eventually become full blown grand mal seizures.  The seizures have affected her tolerance for frustration, her focus, her short-term and long-term memory, and her behavior in a BIG way.

Ashlee was spayed on 04/11/97.  She never needed anything for pain and was given nothing to "prevent" infection (Thank GOD!).  She developed a mild infection at the incision site, but I treated that topically with Neosporin and put a t-shirt on her to keep her from licking at it.  The infection cleared up without the need for antibiotics.

4: The approximate date of the event: A whole, all-too-short lifetime, but I believe the initial turning point was that 4th puppy shot.  She was diagnosed with the demodex that very day, and I don't think it was any coincidence that the localized condition turned generalized right after that 4th puppy shot.  I believe the localized condition was her body's way of telling us it couldn't handle any more shots, but we didn't know that and vaccinated anyway.
 
5: The adverse reaction[s] YOU observed and/or became aware of [nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, inability to walk, gastric ulceration, liver failure, kidney damage, death, lethargy, aggression, etc.] - please list ALL known and/or suspected symptoms/conditions: Puppy shots caused minor lethargy and inappetance for about 24 hours or so following the shot.  Ashlee was diagnosed with demodectic mange during the same visit where she received her last puppy shot (series of 4).  Two weeks later we returned to the vet's office as the localized (and "not serious, so don't worry about it") condition had turned generalized and was already moving down her front legs and around the base of her tail.  She struggled not only with generalized demodex for the rest of her short life, but also secondary yeast and bacterial infections that often accompany the condition.  She developed chronic diarrhea from all the repeated antibiotics, and I am quite certain she had intestinal yeast overgrowth issues because of it, too.  Yeast infections developed on the bottoms of her feet as well as across her rear end where the demodex and bacterial infections hit her the hardest.

7: Whether or not your veterinarian informed you of the potential/possible risks/side effects BEFORE dispensing the named drug/vaccination, stating whether such information was provided verbally and/or in written form:  NO!  Never so much as a whispered word of doubt, suspicion or concern about possible adverse reactions.  Even AFTER Ashlee developed demodectic mange, the vet continued to vaccinate according to "schedule" for rabies.  (Lord, I wish I had known better........)  We did, not, however vaccinate her for parvo, distemper and what not again.  My vet advised against it because she was so sick all the time.
 
8: Where you learned about the potential/possible risks/side effects of the drug/vaccination [i.e., www.srdogs.com, group list, friend, Internet research, TV/news, etc.]:   Researching on the internet, in books, via Yahoo groups, and pulling the pieces together with those aids.
 
9: State whether or not you would still have allowed the drug/vaccination to be given to your pet had you KNOWN of the potential/possible risks/side effects:  Absolutely NOT!  If I could go back, we would do everything different from day 1, starting with that very first vaccination.  If I had been told that the manufacturers package warnings say only to vaccinate HEALTHY animals, I most certainly would NOT have allowed ANY vaccination to be done the day Ashlee was diagnosed with the demodex.
 
10: The original reason you took your pet to the veterinarian [toenail clipping, vaccinations, injury, any symptoms]:  Puppy wellness check and shots.  Being a "responsible" new puppy owner.
 
11: How was your pet's health/life affected after the drug/vaccination? Ashlee was euthanized at 2 years and 9 days of age when her immune system completely collapsed.  I am quite certain that all the vaccinations and drugs we dumped in and on her during her short life are what ultimately caused her immune collapse.  The body can only handle so many toxins before something gives.  To be honest, when I look at the list above and see what all we really put her through in that too short time, I am surprised her immune system didn't collapse much sooner than it did.

I gave Sissy Rimadyl for 1 week.  I was supposed to renew it, but I don’t really like medications much, so I stopped giving her the Rimadyl.

10: The original reason you took your pet to the veterinarian [toenail clipping, vaccinations, injury, any symptoms]:  Kip was let out to go "potty" on Saturday afternoon (1/29).  Came in the house and couldn't put weight on his hind leg.  Thought he pulled a muscle, or something, so watched him over the weekend.  Did not improve, so took him to vet on Monday (1/31) and was told that he tore his ACL.  We could have surgery or just let it be (and risk arthritis setting in).  Chose the surgery because we expected many more years of companionship.  Surgery was scheduled for the following Tues. (2/8) and was told to give Kip Rimadyl 2x a day for pain/inflammation until the surgery.

11: How was your pet's health/life affected after the drug/vaccination?  He died (necropsy report states he died from gastric rupture and peritonitis, most logically caused by sensitivity to Rimadyl.  The hole in his stomach was the size of a softball!)   Kip joined our family at the age of 12 weeks, and in his entire life, the only times he had been to the vet were for his yearly check-ups and immunizations.  He was an extraordinarily healthy dog -- never got sick, never got injured, had an absolutely clean medical record.  There were no pre-existing conditions and pre-surgical blood tests all came out "clean."

His challenge study results form the scientific base of the American Animal Hospital Association's (AAHA) 2003 Canine Vaccine Guidelines, Recommendations, and Supporting Literature (Attachment 7). These studies are based on science - they are not arbitrary. The public, however, cannot access this data. The American Animal Hospital Association only makes this report available to veterinarians, not private citizens, and Maine's pet owners are unaware that the AAHA Guidelines state on Page 18 that: "We now know that booster injections are of no value in dogs already immune, and immunity from distemper infection and vaccination lasts for a minimum of 7 years based on challenge studies and up to 15 years (a lifetime) based on antibody titer." They further state that hepatitis and parvovirus vaccines have been proven to protect for a minimum of 7 years by challenge and up to 9 and 10 years based on antibody count. 

My dog developed Inflammatory Bowel Disease after receiving annual vaccinations.  She had been very allergic to vaccines in the past and required an injection of benadryl along with the shots.  The vet NEVER expressed any concern over this.  From website:" I believe the massive vaccination program for canine parvovirus, which began some thirty plus years after we began vaccinating cats with feline parvovirus (panleukopenia virus), is creating this situation in dogs. If this is true, then the imminent future bodes poorly for dogs if the problem in cats is an indication. Furthermore, we have been seeing inflammatory bowel disease in dogs over the past five to ten years. Prior to this it was virtually nonexistent. I am certain that vaccination for parvovirus and coronavirus is a major cause. I commonly see inflammatory bowel disease that arises within a month or two after vaccination for one of these viruses."

I also believe after reading this that her Diabetes and my 15 year old Miniature Pinscher's Diabetes (strange TWO Min Pins developed diabetes) is a result of the auto immune suppressive effects of overimmunization.

This drug was given as part of a regime for cancer (antiangiogenesis). Neither the vet nor oncologist told me that kidney failure was something to look for. I was advised of GI problems, which is in a boxed warning section in the drug pamphlet and overshadowed my reading of it. Boomer has an aggressive cancer. I may have chosen to give the drug for this aggressive cancer, but, if I had known the incidence of renal failure is so great, I would have been more alert to the signs and symptoms. I attributed the vomiting to GI irritation of the Piroxicam.

He is still in acute renal failure and on IV fluids (11/13/06). His lab work was so high initially that it could not be read by the clinic. The vets were surprised he was even walking. It is still not known if he will have chronic renal failure.

Both the vet and oncologist keep blaming dehydration. I was with the dog constantly. I am a nurse. I watched him. He did vomit his food (5 times over 6 days) an hour after eating but not bile. He was drinking. His gums were pink and showed good capillary refill. He was alert and greeting Halloween costumes at the door. He was urinating (testing showed the urine contained little filtrate) and having bowel movements. I have questioned the Piroxicam, and Adriamycin, as a cause. No one points a finger. The oncologist, who I really like, said the ARF could be caused by
1.      Cancer. Boomer just had an ultrasound, chest X-ray, blood work on 10/18. All perfect.
2.      Drug Therapy
3.      Something else
He couldn’t rule out the drugs as one of three causes but keeps pushing for the ARF to be in the “something else” category.
Boomer has never been sick in his life before the cancer diagnosis in June 2006. I had a conventional vet friend on stand-by for emergencies and a holistic vet that we went for annual checkups and vaccine titers. On 11/1 I took Boomer to the oncologist since I thought the drugs were causing GI upset. Boomer was in a life-threatening situation and so remained under the care of a  regular vet at the clinic/hospital. He was in the hospital for 6 days. NO ONE questioned potential problems that could also cause renal failure and should be routinely ruled out. I had to ask to have Lepto testing, tick-borne disease testing, and testing for autoimmune disease. I am still realizing other things that need to be tested, such as pancreatitis (amylase and lipase were normal but these enzymes don’t always rise with pancreatitis). No abdominal X-ray was ordered. NO ONE asked me who my regular vet was or if Boomer had ever been vaccinated. He is on Soloxine and that is in his chart. However, I had to ask that this be started.  I was told to keep Boomer on Hill’s K/D. Boomer has been fed a raw diet since he was 4 months old. When I told the vet this, he made a face and turned his head away. He stayed on K/D while in the hospital and for 2 days when he came home while I read furiously about a kidney diet. He is now on a raw kidney diet and I figure the amount of protein, fats, carbs, CA, phosphorus for each meal. The vet told me Boomer would have to be on K/D the rest of his life. He said he could not handle protein. The low protein diet has been disproved and there are many articles about it, including studies done by Purina.
Boomer is getting care and his lab work has improved. But I feel that the direction of his prognosis rests with me making the calls, not the vet. And that is scary. I am a nurse, not a vet.  I could type on and on.  Thank you for the opportunity to “vent.”

Jerry was perfectly healthy despite having hip displaysia.  Our vet gave us samples of Rimadyl for his hip pain and assured us the drug was extremely safe and that he had hundreds of dogs on it.  We gave Jerry a dose a 6:00pm.  By 9:00, we let him out to go to the bathroom and he was laying in the rain in the yard even though he hated to get wet.  His eyes were glassy and he seemed confused when we called to him.  He stumbled and his back legs were not working.  I called the emergency line at our vet, and they assured me that he was probably just nauseous from the medicine.  My husband had to carry him up to the bedroom, and we stayed up with him all night crying and telling him it was going to be all right – again, we called our vet, who said to bring him in at 6:00am.  Jerry died in the car on the way to the vet.

They gave us the drug information but verbally downplayed any possible side effects.  They categorically denied that Rimadyl could have killed Jerry and had a number of absolutely ridiculous suggestions as to the cause of his death – from gunshot wound to drinking antifreeze – and we’d been no further than 20 feet from Jerry the entire day of his death.  I thought it was sadly ironic that the vet that confirmed our dogs death was wearing “rimadyl” embroidered scrubs.

After Jerry died, we found websites that talked about the dangers of Rimadyl.

NEVER.  Like I said, Jerry was otherwise healthy, despite his hip pain.  We expected to have many more years with him.

Since Kerrys death l have lost complete trust in the Veterinary proffession and l now dont believe anything i was told about her health, at the beginning of 2008 i discovered Glucosamine, l asked a locum vet at the surgery if it was ok to give it to Kerry, she said it was,after about 4 weeks l noticed Kerry was walking better and quicker, our walks got longer and within 2 months she was like a new dog, even her skin and fur were better than they ever were,my vet couldn`t believe the difference,surely this would have been an ldeal time to reduce or discontinue the administration of Rimadyl,when i took her to the vet 7 days before her death with what i now believe was an adverse reaction to Rimadyl instead of my vet telling me to discontinue giving Kerry Rimadyl she told me to increase the dose for 3 days,dispite not knowing what was wrong with her,this im sure sealed my lovely faithful dog`s fate.I cannot forgive myself for not researching Rimadyl before i gave it to her and for putting my blind trust in my vet.
